Ashford EDU 440 Week 2 Assignment Using Boolean Logic
Due by Day 7. Using Boolean Logic. Complete Parts 1 and 2 of this week’s assignment.
Part I:
Boolean logic uses three primary operators: AND, OR, NOT.
1. Using the word AND narrows the results
2.
Using OR broadens the results
c. The word NOT narrows the results by eliminating terms.
Let’s practice: Go into Google. On the search bar, type the key word dolphins. Look for the results number at the top of the page and fill in the chart below:

Number of search results
Search exactly as written: dolphins
(There should be a large number of results)

Search with Boolean operators: dolphins AND whales (There should be fewer results – or narrower results)

Search with Boolean operators: dolphins OR whales (There should be more results - Results will be expanded)
Search with Boolean operators: dolphins NOT Miami (There should be limited results – or narrower results)

Practice:
Go back to your own workplace research example. Using the keywords you listed last week and other appropriate terms, complete a chart using your search terms. How could you narrow or broaden your search using only one operator? How can you combine your search terms using the Boolean technique to broaden your search? To narrow your search?
Step One: Create a chart identical to the one found in your online classroom using keywords from your own workplace research example.
Step Two: Write down at least six key terms or term combinations that you could use to conduct a keyword search.
Step Three: Describe how you can combine your search terms using the Boolean technique to broaden and narrow your search.
Part 2:
Continue with your research question from Week One. Think about your current working situation or a situation within your current job or current civic activity that would require information on a subject that you know very little about. Use the Research Skills Worksheet found in your online course as a road map for research or problem solving. Write your response in the spaces provided.
Step 1: Fill out the chart below for your research project.Step 2: Answer the three additional questions.

assignment.

What is the topic to be researched?
Write down your specific search statement.

What questions have to be answered?
Write four research questions to accompany search statements.

What key concepts have to be addressed?
Identify and write down two or three key concepts.
What synonyms can be used for key concepts?
Write four to eight synonyms for key concepts.
What perspective should be used to address the questions?
Determine the point of view – subjective, objective, multiple perspectives.
How current does your information have to be?
Look at the questions and decide the importance of currency of the resource.

Final Step:
In an APA-formatted four- to five- page document, include your charts from Part 1 and Part 2 and analyze your research skills by answering the following questions in a well-written reflective narrative:
1. How did the exercise in Part 1 help you? When you applied a Boolean search, what new ideas came up? Compare this method of searching to your normal way of searching?
2. How did following the process in Part 2 help you find and access the information you needed? As a result, do you think you were more efficient in your research? What are the most difficult steps in this process? Why?
