Ashford EDU 440 Week 1 Assignment Resource Exploration
Due by Day 7. Resource Exploration. This assignment serves as preparation for final research paper. Write a three- to four- page paper answering the following questions and finding reference sources to use in the research for your final paper.
Assignment Instructions:
Think about your current working situation or civic activities. Think of a situation within your current job or civic activity that would require information on a subject that you know very little about. Imagine that you will have to teach this information to your co-workers or to others in your group. This is the beginning of the research paper that you will develop within the next five weeks. We will be working with this information and this topic for the next five weeks, so consider a topic that will be useful to your work or civic activities.
Go into the Ashford University Library. Use the databases and any sources within our library to research information about your chosen topic. You may also use the web, but most of your primary reference sources should be from the library databases.
Within this paper, fill in the charts located in Chapter Two, Activity #1 and Activity #4 of the book 100% Information Literacy Success (Which can be found in Week One of your online course). Once the charts are completed, analyze the resources you listed for their type, their accessibility and their description and provide a summary of the process. At the end of your three- to four- page paper, have a Reference page using APA style formatting that includes the textbook, the Ashford library databases, and any websites you discussed within your paper. You may use Bibme to format your references.
Step 1: Think about your current working situation. Think of a situation within your current job or civic activity that would require information on a subject that you know very little about. Imagine that you will have to teach this information to your co-workers or to others in your group.
*Note: This will be your research paper for the next five weeks.
Step 2: Review your library resources, consult with the reference librarian at your local library or Ashford library and search the Internet to complete the Resource Tables for your field of study.
Step 3: Summarize your findings by answering the following questions:
§  What are possible focused questions you could develop to guide your research process?
§  What specific primary information sources might be available for your field of study? (Use Ashford
Library databases). List as many examples as you can.
§  What specific secondary information sources are available for your field of study? (Use Ashford Library
databases or web resources). List as many examples as you can.
§  What are potential issues with using any of these secondary information sources for your field of study?
Step 4: Write a Works Cited page using APA style of formatting. The Works Cited will be the last page of this Resource Exploration. Use an online bibliography maker. View this short video to learn how to use one online bibliography maker called Bibme.

Ashford EDU 440 Week 2 Assignment Using Boolean Logic
Due by Day 7. Using Boolean Logic. Complete Parts 1 and 2 of this week’s assignment.
Part I:
Boolean logic uses three primary operators: AND, OR, NOT.
1. Using the word AND narrows the results
2.
Using OR broadens the results
c. The word NOT narrows the results by eliminating terms.
Let’s practice: Go into Google. On the search bar, type the key word dolphins. Look for the results number at the top of the page and fill in the chart below:

Number of search results
Search exactly as written: dolphins
(There should be a large number of results)

Search with Boolean operators: dolphins AND whales (There should be fewer results – or narrower results)

Search with Boolean operators: dolphins OR whales (There should be more results - Results will be expanded)
Search with Boolean operators: dolphins NOT Miami (There should be limited results – or narrower results)
View the Jing that completes this exercise for you.
Practice:
Go back to your own workplace research example. Using the keywords you listed last week and other appropriate terms, complete a chart using your search terms. How could you narrow or broaden your search using only one operator? How can you combine your search terms using the Boolean technique to broaden your search? To narrow your search?
Step One: Create a chart identical to the one found in your online classroom using keywords from your own workplace research example.
Step Two: Write down at least six key terms or term combinations that you could use to conduct a keyword search.
Step Three: Describe how you can combine your search terms using the Boolean technique to broaden and narrow your search.
Part 2:
Continue with your research question from Week One. Think about your current working situation or a situation within your current job or current civic activity that would require information on a subject that you know very little about. Use the Research Skills Worksheet found in your online course as a road map for research or problem solving. Write your response in the spaces provided.
